Luca, a dog that has been abandoned. The story of a hunting dog with a happy end.
One day a small hunting dog (a cross between an English Setter and a Breton Setter) appeared in front of the house of one of our friends. He was totally exhausted and starved. As our friend already had four dogs of her own, she asked us to take in the dog for a while. He was very frightened and was hardly able to walk. The next day we took him to the vet, who prescribed an antibiotic. We fed him every two hours and stroked him a lot. He had no microchip, thus we equipped him with a microchip. That way the old owner would not have had any rights to the dog, should he have turned up.
Hunger won over fear and we managed to get a step ahead through feeding the dog. He slowly became a quite normal dog: he became more quiet, was less and less frightened and also became more playful. He adapted very well and also became more lively as time went by. He also established his rank among the other dogs. He began to understand that we would not beat him and that we would treat him kindly. We decided to keep him with us for good. We called him Luca. He is a gentle dog and every day it’s a pleasure to see him sleep happily and satisfied in his basket and playing in our garden.
